How to install AppCake: An Installous alternative

The first thing every jailbreaker does after jailbreaking their iDevice is install a Cydia app that enables them to download paid apps for free of cost, i.e. do app piracy, but the app that was the most famous and orchestrated with the purpose, Installous, has been shut down because of the closing of its hosting repository. When you open Cydia now and it tries to update, it gives this error which, if read clearly, gives the proof of the problem.


So, Installous is gone and now, many users are thinking that their is no way to get the paid apps for free now, but that is a misconception. There are many Installous alternatives but they never got to be famous because of Installous, the app that started it all.

One of such alternatives is AppCake+ which is the next best option to download the apps and it is the most famous app after Installous. It also has got extensive collection of apps for you to download and its website, iphonecake.com, can also be directly used for app downloading and app crackers can use it for app submissions. Its installation is fairly easy but requires a bit of know how.

So, lets have a look at the procedure to download the app that can give us hope, AppCake+.

Step 1: As you might have already guessed, you need a jailbroken iDevice to be able to download paid apps for free. So, you need a jailbroken idevice to be able to install AppCake+. If you don't have one, have a look at this guide(for iOS 5 and below users) or this guide(for iOS 6 users).

Update [05.02.2013] = An untethered jailbreak, evasi0n, has now been released for iOS 6.x iDevices.

Step 2: Now open Cydia and let it download and load its resources and updates.



Step 3: Now go to the Manage tab from the bottom and then click on Sources.


Step 4: In the Sources section, click on Edit in the top right corner and then on Add, which now appears in the top left corner.


Step 5: When you click on Add, a dialogue box appears. Type cydia.iphonecake.com in it and click on Verify. After showing verifying URL for a moment, it asks if you want to add the source or not, click on Add Anyway. Then let it download the resources of the repository you have just added and load them. When it displays Return to Cydia, click on it and you will be back to the sources section.


Step 6: The hard part is over. Now, when you get back to the sources section, click on the source we just added, i.e. cydia.iphonecake.com . Here you will find the list of the apps it hosts. Click on AppCake+(iPhone or iPod owners) or AppCake+ HD(iPad owners).


Step 7: Now click on Install and then on Confirm that appears at the very exact place. After you hit Confirm, it will start downloading the small app and then it will load it. When it shows Return to Cydia, click on it.

Note: The users who had Installous installed in their devices will only need to download AppCake+ but those who are doing all this for the first time will also see an additional download named AppSync. This app is a must for AppCake+ or apps like that to work properly.


Step 8: Now, the AppCake+ icon appears on your SpringBoard but there is a problem. It appears to be a white colored icon with no design and when you open the app, it crashes immediately.


That is because the installation process hasn't completed just yet. Its like installing a major program on your windows PC. To complete the process, you need to reboot your iDevice.


And now the app appears in its true colors and works just fine.

The app in itself is great and won't let you miss Installous much. It has a very clean and good looking interface and there is a very good chance that you will have fun with it.

  2. I followed your instructions to the letter but when I tap appcake+ it opens then exits to the homescreen. Help!!

    1. This sometimes happen with Cydia tweaks and apps.
      Try hard-reseting your iphone to clear some memory space by holding home+power button until the device restarts.
      It should help but if it doesn't then uninstall and remove appcake+ and iphonecake repo as well. Try the process again and take critical care that neither your device goes to stand by or get any error line whatsoever during the process.
      Hopefully, the problem should now disappear :)

  5. installed app cake and then downloaded whatsapp. but for some reason its not installing after downloading

    1. Sometimes maybe because of irregular data connection, ipa doesn't download completely but AppCake shows it to be downloaded and if such ipa is installed installation doesn't go through.Try deleting the ipa and downloading it from other source. Hopefully, it will solve the issue.

  8. Hello. After I click on 'Install' It says 'Cannot Comply' and "Note: The requested modifications cannot be applied due to required dependencies or conflicts that cannot be automatically found of fixed"

    ave the old Iphone model, and I used to have Installous but it stopped working long ago. How can I fix this problem? I was so close...

    1. Have you carefully installed appsync??
      Sometimes this maybe caused because of repo issues. Try uninstalling and installing again or try installing and then try using sinful repo (sinfuliphonerepo.com) to download appsync and then try installing appcake+. Hope your problem should be resolved.

    2. Sometimes it gets messed up because of infinite loops occurence. Remove and reinstall appcake. It should work. It works on my iPad 3.

  14. For me, i cant even add the repo to cydia. It shows verification error when i type in the repo. Do u know why?

    2. Due to the recent release of evasi0n and thus a new horde of jailbroken devices trying to access cydia have emerged. It will all get settled in a bit of time.

    3. It shows that verification because it warns you that the source you are adding contains cracked apps. Isn't that the exact reason you're downloading AppCake?

    1. Due to the recent emerge of a horde of new jailbroken devices, due to release of evasi0n, the Cydia as well as different ipa hosting services are strugling. So sometimes, due to this problem or network connection issue, ipa doesn't get downloaded. So take care your ipa is of complete size. There shouldn't be any problem after this.

  21. Does anyone know why AppCake closes when it's downloading big files? I try to download sygic (500mb) and AppCake closes halfway through. Are there any ways to fix this?

    1. There is some problem with how AppCake handles system resources and thus it crashes sometimes. Apparently, the latest update also doesn't solve it. As a workaround, you can download the apps on your PC and put the .ipa files in your AppCake and the install. Click here to know about it.

  23. Hey i have a little problem. Whenever i want to download a app it pops into downloading, as it should, i see the download bar, but it is as it wont download. How do i get it to download the app fully? please help

  24. Hello there, thanks for the tutotial, was great! But i have a little problem! When i use An App for a while was perfect but then the App recognice that we are using an iligal program! And stop working. Why is that? I have an iPad 3 with iOS 5, also i install appsync and appcake HD. I have problem with Tweetbot and Coolpapers for iPad :(

  25. Hey, thanks alot for this tutorial. I kept getting the "Cannot Comply" error message but through this method, I was able to avoid that and get AppCAke. However, I encountered one small problem: after I installed AppCake and restarted my iPod, all my apps except the preinstalled ones had their icons turned completetly white. As in no icon pictures. AM I the only one with this problem or is there a way to fix it?? Thanks again

    2. Yeah, I tried that. After it restarted for the first time after installing AppCake, all the downloaded apps were blank and then after I messed around with the icons a bit, half of them went back to normal but the rest of the icons stayed white. Any solutions? The apps still work fine, its just annoying

    1. As these softwares deal and bypass the DRM managing part of iOS and install cracked apps, the installation process takes an irritating amount of time.
      Just leave the screen on while it is installing for some time untill it shows an error or the process completes.
      By the way which game are you trying to install?

    5. There might be some problem with downloading of the ipa. Try this to see if zero in on the problem. If even now, the problem persists, then remove AppCake, reboot your device and try installing AppCake and then the applications again.

    1. It looks like your repo wasn't added completely.
      Try removinh the repo, rebooting your device and retry the process. It may work.

  31. Hey, I'm downloading most of the Final fantasies II, III, IV, and Chrono Trigger as well. I'm about 75% done and suddenly the download PAUSES. I set my lock to never and appcake to not go into sleep mode, so I thought about checking some stuff out and I apparently had appcake HD which was for iPads and that I should use appcake instead. That's what I'm tryna do right now. I'll post again about the details after an hour or so I guess. Hope you can help. Thanks mate

  32. When I open AppCake I get a message that says there is a newer version. I can download it but then get a error message that says ' install failed'. Do you have any idea why this happens and how to fix it? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me

    1. AppCake only has those apps which are not free on Apple's application store and the apps you mentioned are free there. Thus they can be directly downloaded from Apple's application store without any issue.

    1. Did you try rebooting the ipad?
      If even that is not happening, try hard resetting it by pressing home and power button at the same button until Apple logo comes up on the screen.

    1. This is a known bug in Cydia store as well as many Cydia apps. Its better if you keep your iPhone's screen unlocked during the download process.
