Hacktivating and Unlocking an iPhone

iPhone has always been an iconic smartphone. But the icon comes with a price. Many of us know that carrier locked phones are subsidized but you need a carrier sim and connection to activate and use such phones. But as we all also know, there is always a solution to every problem. So, here i am with the problem and its solution.

If any of you might have tried to activate a carrier-locked iPhone with another carrier's sim, you must be familiar with this is error message  For those who do not know, let me inform you that Apple's Servers DO NOT let you even activate a carrier-locked iPhone without the carrier's working sim and this is the error message you get.

So, to unlock the iPhone so that you can use any carrier's sim on it we need to get past this error message. This process is know as hacktivating.

So, first lets see how to do that. Although it may sound a big thing but its actually very easy.

Step 1: Insert any sim in the iPhone and switch it ON. You'll see the error message now.

Step 2: To hacktivate you need to jailbreak the iPhone right here only. If you were thinking of doing something without jailbreak then you should the Software Unlock Utility used in this tutorial also needs a jailbroken iPhone. To know how to jailbreak, have a look at iOS 6.x Untethered Jailbreak if you are on iOS6 and Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 if you are on iOS5 or lower.

Now, when the device will boot, it will show the no SIM Card Inserted error for just a moment and then it will let you see the home-screen of your iPhone. Here you go, you have hacktivated your iPhone and bypassed the activation error.

But you have just bypassed the activation screen and a "No SIM Card Installed" error still sits on your screen.

To make it go away so that iPhone can recognize your SIM we need to unlock the iPhone.

Note: You need to have wi-fi connection to be able to go through with the unlock process because it requires internet connection.

So, lets have a look at it.

Step 1: Go to the settings menu of your iPhone and connect it to a wi-fi connection or hotspot.

A symbol like this should be sitting in your iPhone's status bar at the top after successfully latching on to the wi-fi network.

Step 2: Click on the Cydia icon on your home-screen and let it load and reload its sources.

Step 3: Click on search and then type ultrasn0w in it. You can click on any of the three links that comes up but I chose to click the first one.

Step 4: Now, click on Install in the top-right corner and then Confirm at the very same place.

Step 5: Now it will download the small package and reload the data. Then it will show 'Reboot the Device', click on it and let your iPhone reboot.

Step 6: Now, when your device re-boots you will have an unlocked iPhone. But after rebooting, you may again get NO Sim Card Installed error. All you need to do now is take out the SIM tray and again put it in. You should get the following on-screen notification now.

Voila!!

For iOS 6 users only

But, iOS 6 users won't be getting this. There is an issue with ultrasn0w as of now which is yet to be fixed but a solution is already out.

After you are done with Step 5 above, follow these steps.

Step 5.1 : Go to Cydia again and then go to manage tab. Then click on Sources.

Step 5.2: Click on Edit in top right corner and then add in top left corner.

Step 5.3: Type repo.insanelyi.com and click on Add Source. When it gives you an error click on Add anyway and let the process complete.

Step 5.4: Go to Search tab of Cydia and type ultrasn0w fixer for 6.0 .

Step 5.5: Click on it. Then click on Install and then on Confirm.

Step 5.6: When Reboot the Device appears, click on it.

Now you can move on to Step 6 as well.

Step 6: Now, when your device re-boots you will have an unlocked iPhone. But after rebooting, you may again get NO Sim Card Installed error. All you need to do now is take out the SIM tray and again put it in. You should get the following on-screen notification now.

Voila!!

So, there you go. Now you have an unlocked iPhone. You should know that if you update or restore you iOS firmware, you will loose the unlock and you will have to start the whole process from square one.

  1. So this will not work on an iPhone 5 running 6.1.2?
It will also not work on an iPhone 4 unless it has the specified baseband shown in the photo on step 4?

    1. This will work if the jailbreak is available.
Also if you want to unlock, you can try iUnlock.thesmarthacks.com and get a factory unlock.
