Zeppelin : Operator Icon Tweak

Today i was able to get airtel to assign me the batman status officially on my iPhone. I know everybody is envying me now but i worked for it. Its one of those great feelings you have which you cant explain in words. I repeatedly click on power button just to have a look at it because i feel its inevitably much more fun and cooler to look at then 'Airtel' written besides signal bars.

Now, one thing i want to tell you is that i am no batman and obviously airtel feels the same( :P). The secret besides this batman logo is a cydia based tweak by iOS developer jivhg that lets me replace network operators name with a specific image. Its no rocket science and although it may seem hard to digest for new iPhone users but as you will find out its quite really simple.

So, lets make you batman too. :)

Installing Zeppelin

Step 1: First of all,as expected , you need a jailbroken iDevice with cydia installed. If you dont know how-to jailbreak your iDevice, head over to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 Untethered (for all iOS 5.x and lower users) or iOS 6.x Untethered Jailbreak (for iOS6 adapters) .

Step 2: After you are done with jailbreaking and installing cydia(this has to be done manually only if you are on iOS6), restart your phone.

Step 3: Scroll the screens and open Cydia. New jailbreakers choose user in starting. Let it load and become steady(that means it is done with all reloading there was to be done).

Step 4: Click on search tab in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then search of zeppelin (as shown in the screenshot below). Click on the first search result(i.e. zeppelin) and when it comes up click on Install in the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 5: Now, click on confirm and then let it download. When done 'Restart to Springboard' should come up. Click it and your device will be restarted.

Now when your device restarts, instead of your network operator name you will have batman logo in the status bar like i had in the very first picture.
PS: Your screen wont be blurred as shown in the right side of result image. Its just editing to highlight the Batman Logo.

So here you go, you are batman too now. Go fight crimes in the night :P
By the way, first scroll down to know how to set this logo to your liking.

Setting Up Zeppelin

There have been tweaks in past for this but the reason i like this one is that it pops-up in settings menu after getting installed. Now from here you can disable the tweak to get back your network operator name which now eliminates the need of removing the tweak from cydia everytime you wanted to hide it. Also, it lets you chose from 19(18 logos + none) theme settings apart from the option on-off toggle gives you.

As you can see the list is quite tempting. The best part is the icons are not limited to the default set of logos zeppelin offers. All you have to do to get more is install a specific icon pack and you are good to go. But the default pack is in no way a weak one.!!
So, guys go ahead, change the logo in your status bar and become what you would like to be :)

Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 Untethered

Well, as we know iOS6 is not worth losing your jailbreak but even if you want iOS6 on your iDevice and want it jailbroken, the privilege is only limited to A4 or lower based iDevices due to the upgraded bootrom in A5 and above SoCs. But if you have a compatible device for that you can head over to this step by step detailed guide and get a tethered jailbreak for now.

But as said above iOS6 is not worth that. So, i though of posting a step by step guide on how to jailbreak your iDevice if you are on iOS 5.1.1.

But before we get cracking lets see the list of compatible devices.
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPad
  • iPad 2
  • The New iPad
  • iPod Touch(4th Generation)
  • iPod Touvh(3rd Generation)
  • Apple TV (2nd Generation)
In a nutshell, all iOS 5 compatible devices can be jailbroken as of now.

One more thing, there are two main jailbreaking softwares, redsn0w and greenpois0n.
They do basically the same thing but there is one specific difference.
In redsn0w, you either need the IPSW files of iOS you want to jailbreak or at least internet on the system you are going to use for jailbreak process so that redsn0w can identify the iOS version and get required kernel headers. Also you have to put the device in DFU mode during the process which can be tacky sometimes.Whereas in greenpois0n, nothing else is needed after you are done downloading the greenpois0n's absinthe 2.0.4 software.
But you shall not worry, this guide includes procedure for both ways so you can choose on the basis of what you have and how you want to do it. Though i personally prefer greenpois0n because of its simplicity and hassle free usage.

First up, Greenpois0n.

Step 1:If your iDevice is not updated to iOS 5 then do so by downloading respective IPSW file from below and then opening iTunes and clicking on restore while pressing shift key and then pointing to the IPSW file you just downloaded. If your iDevice is updated then you can proceed.
You can directly update your device using iTunes but if you are gonna use the data why not directly get the IPSWs in case you want to re-update your iDevice or update an acquaintances' similar iDevice.
Note: The process works for iOS5 and all lower iOS versions.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone, Open iTunes and click on backup(In case a problem occurs while jailbreaking).

Step 3: Download the latest version of greenpois0n from one of the links given below.
Step 4: Extract the contents of the zip folder and click on absinthe-win-2.0.4.exe and then it will consolidate the contents in the same folder.

Step 5: Now click on absinthe.exe and connect your iDevice. It will show that your device has been detected. If there are no errors then just click the jailbreak button, sit back and let absinthe do its job.

Note: During the process your iPhone screen will show 'Restore In Progress'. Dont worry its just getting jailbroken.

Step 6: When it say 'Done', jailbreak is DONE. You can now enjoy it.

When you run Cydia for the first time select your category to be user and let it load.

Now lets look at how to jailbreak using Redsn0w.

Step 2:Connect your iPhone, Open iTunes and click on backup(In case a problem occurs while jailbreaking).

Step 3:You need to download latest version of redsn0w which you can do using the requisite link from below.
Step 4: Extract the contents of the zip file you just downloaded and run redsn0w.exe in administrator mode.(Right Click->Administrator mode)

Step 5: Connect your iDevice to the computer and switch it off. Yes, you heard it right you need a connected switched off device. You have to connect A5 devices (iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3) in normal mode.

Step 6: Now in redsn0w click on Jailbreak. Now, it will instruct you how to put your device in DFU mode(which can be checked by seeing if your iDevice is recognized by your computer but screen is black on your device). If your device restarts, try the process again until you can get your iDevice in DFU mode. Do not dishearten or frustrate if you cant do it in first go, its usual for jailbreakers and do not worry it wont harm your device.

Step 7: After succesfully putting your device in DFU mode, you will be moved to next screen where be sure to select Install Cydia option.

Now you will see redsn0w getting kernel patches and doing its business. Then when on screen you will see done written, use of your computer is done now and your device will boot up.

You will now see a bunch of codes running around in your screen and then pineapple logo and now when the device restarts you will have a jailbroken iDevice with cydia installed on it.

When you run Cydia for the first time select your category to be user and let it load.

So here you can see redsn0w is a bit tackier process then greenpois0n for simple jailbreak but for advanced options like saving your blobs redsn0w is recommened.

Hope you liked the guide and found it useful.:)

Work-arounds for using Google Maps on iOS6

As i promised in my last post that i am gonna post work-arounds for using google maps on iOS6, here i am doing the same for you. First, lets do a short recap. We talked about grieving iOS6 customers and faulty Maps app and then i told that a hack is in works to solve this issue but it is far from complete yet.

Now, there are 2 workarounds for using Google Maps on iOS6.

1. A shortcut on Homescreen

This is an easy to setup method and requires nothing but Safari App. So lets see how it is done.

Step 1: Open Settings>Location Services in your iDevice and toggle ON in front of Safari .

Step 2: Open and click on 'OK' when it asks you about location services. Step 1 was to ensure that after OK reads your location.

Step 3: Tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen and then tap on 'Add to Homescreen' .

Step 4: A menu will appear, type in the name you want for your icon and then tap.

Step 5: A button on your homescreen will appear which can be used directly to use google maps through Safari App.

Now thats how you can add a shortcut to google maps on your homesccreen and use it as a substitute.

Google Maps iOS6 hack on its way

All of the people who have upgraded their iPhones to iOS6 are whining about the damned Apple Maps. Everyone is wishing Google to release its dedicated Maps App for iPhone but we all know, its gonna take a while. While no one has the patience, a cydia hacker and developer named Ryan Petrich decided to act upon it.

Ryan tweeted few days ago that he was able to coax Google Maps on iOS6 succesfully. Though mum about his "trickery", he was succesfully able to port Google Maps from iOS5.1 to iOS6 running Apple iPhone 3GS.

According to Ryan, there are few caveats. The hacked install is "still crashy and cannot be distributed to the public yet, but it mostly works." Also, as most readers would have guessed, your iDevice has to be jailbroken for this to work. Petrich also tweeted that he will not release a "bootlegged" version and promised to include an installer if he is able to carve out the distribution issues. So, that means we may have to wait a bit longer to enjoy Google's mapping data? Well, there are always work around. Next up: These work-arounds. ;)

Meanwhile, you can enjoy the teaser video of the hack Ryan Petrich uploaded. :)

Setting Whatsapp on Vibration

I know what you guys are thinking but many people have asked me how to do that. So i thought i should make a post about it.
So here we go.

Step 1: Obviously you have to install whatsapp on your dear smartphone to get through with the steps.

Step 2:  Now open Whatsapp and goto settings tab. Then click on 'Notifications' button which should be right below 'Chat Settings' button.

Step 3: Then under 'New Messages' set a tone of your choice and do the same for 'Group Message' and set In-App Vibrate and In-App Sounds to be 'On'.

Step 4: Now, if you want to set it on vibrate either set your phone to vibration mode or turn In-App Sounds off. And if you want it to ring then switch In-App souds ON and turn your phone too to ringing.

I hope it was helpful to those it concerned :)

Remembering Steve

It has now been one full year since Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and the person whom we associate the most with Cupertino.

To remember there hero, Apple posted a short 1:45 video commemorating his most highlighted announcements and speeches on its home page.

It also includes a letter from Apple CEO Tim Cook in the memory of Steve Jobs.

Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.
One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.
I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for.
- Tim
This is what Tim Cook's letter said.
Lets Hope, Apple can carry on the amazing legacy of Steve Jobs.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs.

So the respected interbrand's survey is out. This time it has come up with some surprises.
First, for those who don't know what interbrand is, let me help you.

According to their website,
We create and manage brand value by making the brand central to the business’s strategic aims. We’re not interested in simply being the world’s biggest brand consultancy. We want to be the most valued.

Now lets look at this year's list and surprises.

First of all, Samsung now sits at 9th place in the list of world's most valued brands and it is present in top 10 category for the first time ever. Its current valuation is $32.9 billion. So we can safely assume that the investment Samsung made in R&D, manufacturing and marketing of Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Galaxy Note II is starting pay off and not just in terms of huge sales numbers.

Second, Apple now breaths right down the neck of Coca-Cola at number 2 with a massive jump from number 8 last year. Its now valued at $76.5 billion which is roughly 3.3 times the valuation of its direct competitor, Samsung. It is also the only brand with a whopping 129% year over year growth, an achievment in itself.

Lets hope, these companies can keep this up and if possible, maybe even crank it up a notch :)

How-to own any folder as admin

Doesn't it happen sometimes that you wish you had administrator rights to a folder in windows??
Or that you want to delete a file and reach a road-block realizing that maybe due to some issues during the set-up you do not have admin rights although you are actually the admin?

Well, this has happened to me once. I found a neat solution to this which works on every type of windows out there(even Windows 8, if you were curious) because it harness the way windows run .bat files.

I hope you are excited to be able to do it so lets get to it. ;)

Step 1: Locate the folder you want to own as administrator and note down its path.
Step 2: Make a delete.bat file using notepad in the folder you want to own as administrator.
Step 3: Now write the following script in that .bat file.
            SET DIRECTORY_NAME="C:\Locked Directory"
            TAKEOWN /f %DIRECTORY_NAME% /r /d y
            ICACLS %DIRECTORY_NAME% /grant administrators:F /t

You need to change "C:\Locked Directory" to "Path of your directory".

Step 4: Now run this delete.bat . A DOS screen will pop-up, some tech stuff will happen and voila, you own the folder as administrator now.

Note: DO NOT use this for illegal purposes. Its for informational purposes only.
Also some people report problems at step 4 so you may try ' Run as Administrator' to make it succesful.

Hope it helped. Cheers :)
